Our Story

It began around a table in Bhutan.

How a gathering of coaches, psychologists, wisdom keepers and business leaders became a not-for-profit organization in the making, dedicated to the wisdom traditions that inspired it.

Our Origin

The seeds of Abroad were sown in Bhutan, a small Himalayan kingdom known for its philosophy of Gross National Happiness: the idea that true progress includes the wellbeing of people, society and the natural world, not only economic growth.

Our story began with a group of executive coaches, emotion psychologists and wisdom keepers traveling through some of Bhutan’s most remote valleys. Along the way, we crossed paths with a group of business leaders from one of the world’s top business schools, all exploring new futures for leadership and prosperity.

At a resort whose foundation would later become one of our earliest supporters, we gathered around a table to share ideas, meals and stories. In that conversation, something became clear: when people spend time with the timeless wisdom of humanity, they begin to see what truly matters differently.

That was the moment Abroad was born.

Our Purpose

Our purpose is to transmit and preserve ancient and Indigenous wisdom for the benefit of all life.

For more than a decade, we’ve built that purpose through relationships: with monks and abbots in Bhutan, Q’ero wisdom keepers in Peru, Māori leaders in Aotearoa, and teachers across the world who have welcomed us in. Those relationships carry a responsibility. That’s why Abroad is becoming a not-for-profit educational organization, so that everything we do serves the keepers of that wisdom, the places where it lives, and the rituals and practices through which it’s passed on.

What Grew From That Table

What began around a table in Bhutan now lives in several connected ways:

The Wisdom Worldview

Across the traditions we’ve been invited to learn from, we keep noticing recurring themes: a deep relationship with nature, the importance of community, a longer sense of time, and the understanding that everything is connected.

We call this the Wisdom Worldview. It isn’t a philosophy we created, and it doesn’t belong to us. It’s our way of describing what so many teachers have shared, each in their own language and their own way. For us, it comes down to a simple understanding:

Life is sacred.

Everything is connected.

We belong to one another and to the living Earth.

This understanding now shapes Abroad’s purpose, our work and our culture.

Be part of the story.

Abroad’s story is shared by every leader who has traveled with us, every teacher who has welcomed us, and everyone who helps carry this work forward.
